Best Buy Kenya: Best-selling consoles of all time

Throughout the video game’s many years of existence, gamers have been introduced to over a thousand different game consoles. Some flopped while some saw great success and sold millions of units, that’s what we’re going to look back at today.

Over these thousands of consoles, only 43 of them were able to sell over a million units. This is an impressive feat considering the competitiveness in the market. These select few are now known as the cream of the crop when it comes to console gaming.

These consoles transcended the gaming scene and became icons of popular culture itself thanks to their success and popularity. They also have become synonymous with so many people’s childhood that’s why they hold a special place in their hearts.

Over those 43 consoles, we have handpicked a few ones that are some of our personal favourites. These are the ones that we felt had the most impact on the gaming scene. So without further ado, here are some of the best-selling consoles of all time:

Nintendo 64 – 32.93 million units sold

Before even Microsoft and Sony introduced their shiny new consoles, Nintendo has been dominating the video game industry for years. The perfect example of their success can be seen on the world-famous Nintendo 64 which sold over 32 million units.

The console came out back in 1996, two years after the release of the first Playstation. It was the company’s third take on a home video game console and it was received with mostly positive reviews.

The release of the N64 was historical because it was the first time people could play 3D games on their consoles in the form of Super Mario 64. Through this game, people weren’t restricted to the usual 2D platforming mechanics that the previous generation was limited to.

Instead, what they were treated to was a fully rendered 3D game where they could explore everywhere they wanted to. This may not be a big deal today considering the power of the current consoles but back then, it was revolutionary.

Aside from Super Mario 64, several games were introduced in this system that is seen as classics today. This includes:

Mario Kart 64

Mario Kart 64 was the game that gave birth to the kart racing genre. This game pits up to 4 players against each other as they race towards the finish line. What the game does differently is that there are power-ups scattered across the map that can help give them an edge in the race.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

The N64 also gave birth to the first 3D Zelda game. In this game, players were given the chance to move Link in all directions as they traverse the kingdom of Hyrule. Throughout the game, you would have to solve musical based puzzles that can only be solved by using the titular Ocarina of time.

To this day, this console is still regarded as one of the best ones ever produced by Nintendo and in history itself.

Xbox 360 – 84 million units sold

Another reason why people think that the Xbox One underperformed was that it had to come after one of the most successful consoles, the Xbox 360. Microsoft’s second take on a gaming console gave gamers a lot of new memories when it first came out.

It had tons of exclusives like Dead Rising and Gears of War which are considered today as some of the best games Microsoft has ever produced. On top of that, it was the time when online multiplayer was all the rage and Xbox had the perfect online service.

Some of the best games from this console included:

Halo 3

This console marked the birth of the best Halo instalment in the entirety of its series. Halo 3 was an overall amazing experience. From its story to its gameplay, everything was close to perfection. It also featured fun and an exciting multiplayer mode that was played by almost everyone.

Gears of War 2

When it comes to Microsoft exclusives, you can’t forget about Gears of War. This game perfected the cover system and the run and gun mechanic that was introduced in earlier games. It also featured memorable characters and interesting storylines that blended well with the action.

Nintendo Switch – 89.04 million units sold

The Nintendo Switch is the redemption console of Nintendo after the Wii U did not perform well in the market. With this device, they once again revolutionized the gaming scene by creating a hybrid console that players can either play handheld or docked on a television.

The console quickly became one of the most successful devices in history having sold over 89 million units worldwide, and counting despite being only released in 2017. Today, it ranks seventh as the overall best-selling console in history.

Some notable specs of the Switch include an NVIDIA Custom Tegra processor, built-in wifi capabilities, 32 GB of storage and most importantly a fully touch-screen display. Ever since it was first released, this console had multiple variations which are the Lite version and the upcoming OLED version.

Some of the best games that are out on the Nintendo Switch includes:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the launch title of the console and it’s arguably the reason why most people bought the Switch in the first place. When the trailer dropped for this game, every gamer around the world was shocked by how good it looked.

Thankfully, it played as good as it looked because the gameplay is one of the best ones that the industry has seen in a long time. It introduced several mechanics that came in the form of Link’s abilities. This included slowing time down, earning second wind and several others.

Super Mario Odyssey

The Nintendo Switch also gave birth to the latest and arguably the best 3D Mario game in existence, Super Mario Odyssey. This game gave your beloved plumber a new friend in the form of his hat named Cappy.

This gave Mario the ability to take the form of anything in the game once he threw Cappy onto it. It’s a refreshing mechanic and one that the Mario franchise needed and this game properly executed it.

Playstation 4 – 116.4 million units sold

Sony is no stranger to making amazing video game consoles. They always cater to what their audience wants and they deliver on it exceptionally well. The Playstation won the console war by a mile. It outsold its competitor by more than 50 million units and it’s for a lot of reasons.

One of the main reasons why people gravitated towards the PS4 was its price range; it was $100 cheaper than its main competitor. It also helped that they had a lot of titles in store for the future that had gamers excited.

Some of the most memorable games in this console include:

Horizon Zero Dawn

Guerilla games introduced a brand new IP back in 2017 in the form of Horizon Zero Dawn. The premise of the game was mysterious however, it was unique and different from what was flooding the market at that time.

Players take control of Aloy and they are set on an open world. The goal of the game is to find the mystery behind the world that they are living in that’s been overtaken by machines.

God of War

The 2018 God of War was a refreshing instalment on the iconic series of the same name. The game got a complete overhaul from the gameplay mechanics up to the characters themselves. It still featured Kratos but he’s more grizzled and different than the version that players have seen in the previous games.

Playstation 2 – 155 million units sold

Sony stands tall as the best-selling console in history with the Playstation 2. When this console was first released, it was unlike everything else in the market. It provided amazing graphics for its time and the games that were offered were nothing short of amazing.

It had such a massive cultural impact when this console was released because it was when gaming was starting to gain popularity and Sony executed it perfectly.

The best PS2 games to date include:

Resident Evil 4

Although it’s released on almost every platform today, the PS2 was where Resident Evil 4 was perfectly showcased. There were various mechanics that the game introduced but the most iconic one was the over the shoulder camera view. This camera view went on to be used by millions of other games that came after it.

The game lets the player take control of Leon as he is assigned to save the president’s daughter in a virus-plagued town.

GTA: San Andreas

The Playstation 2 was the first and original home to one of the best selling video games of all time, GTA: San Andreas. The game was controversial, to say the least, however, it was one of the most revolutionary titles during its time.

Players get to roam a full city freely in 3D as they do missions from different parts of the map. It also perfected the open-world genre with its addicting driving mechanics and gunplay.
